What Comes After Electric Cars?
- The World Economic Forum wants us to borrow a private car, should we need one, from a communal motor pool. The justifications are contradictory. Motorists only use their cars four percent of the time, on one hand, and on the other, of course, overuse is destroying the environment. Note the potential of a public motor pool for monitoring car use by and surveilling the movements of any individual. And how do you get TO the motor pool in the first place?
Left Targets Public Pension Funds
- The main discussion right now is about human rights violations - public pension funds should divest from companies that enable China to track and detain Uighurs, for example. But, knowing the Left, they won’t stop there. Already, labor unions want funds to divest from the maker of Pegasus spyware and for taxpayers to pick up the tab for any investment losses. Once the principle has been established that public pension funds should answer to the Left, the sky’s the limit.
Left Raises Specter of Right-Wing ‘Environmental Nativism’
- “Racist attacks in which shooters claim to be motivated by environmental concerns are becoming increasingly common, as is the ideology behind them.” - The Nation
Left Split on Constitutional Convention
- For it: George Soros, Cenk Uygur, Larry Lessig, etc.
- Against it: Hillary Clinton, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, etc.
Dem Forces Mobilizing for November
- A grassroots mailing from Washington state shows dozens of Democrat-aligned groups are pulling out all the stops to encourage members to phonebank and knock on doors for candidates. Republicans cannot take anything for granted this November.
6/26/22 - The Left is Big Into 501c3 Abuse
The Left is Big Into 501c3 Abuse
The Left is Big Into 501c3 Abuse
- The IRS and the Democrats enabled the rise of BLM, unleashing mayhem on the nation, by not enforcing tax-exempt rules (e.g., staying nonpolitical), welcoming leaders to the White House, bailing out BLM activists who got arrested, etc.
- More 501c3 abuse - radical Austin Justice Coalition worked to defund the police, influence legislation, and enrich themselves with tax-exempt donations
- Medi-Cal delivering ready meals to program recipients. This is part of the ‘Social Determinants of Health’ push (SDOH) which holds people cannot be healthy until they receive free food, free housing, and free everything. Redistribution is the hidden agenda, plain and simple.
- You probably have heard of unionization efforts among graduate students, but it’s now beginning at the undergraduate level. The Left never stops.
- California mayor transforming town into haven for bicycles. (Editor’s Note: When I moved to D.C. decades ago, it went through a period of being exceedingly unfriendly to cars, doing everything it could to punish car use. It finally gave up, but the bike lanes remain.)
6/5/22 - Climate Reparations: Let’s Give All Our Money to the Third World
Climate Reparations: Let’s Give All Our Money to the Third World
Climate Reparations: Let’s Give All Our Money to the Third World
- “a new report from the Climate and Community Project — a “coalition of academics and policy experts working to advance climate justice” — urges the United States and European countries to provide immediate relief through a program of “climate reparations” payments and debt relief. They want America and institutions that we bankroll, such as the World Bank and the IMF, to write off these nations’ $800 billion of international debt obligations.” Here’s why: “the least developed countries with almost half the world’s population have only contributed about 8 percent of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1850.”
- ‘Climate justice’ - it’s that old saying: green on the outside, red on the inside.
- Here’s yet another well-funded, well-oiled machine of the Left: D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice. This is a project of Teaching for Change which is funded by the Communities for Just Schools Fund and the Taste of Salt Fund. Teachers can pledge to teach the ‘truth’ about systemic racism, LGBT issues, anti-Blackness, blah, blah, blah.
- From Andy Ngo: “Detention Watch Network received funding from Soros' Open Society Foundations. The far-left group calls for the defunding of US law & border enforcement. Newly appointed immigration judge Romy Lerner was one of the main contacts on its nonprofit filing.” https://bizapedia.com/wa/detention-w
- Actually, this has been going on for more than 20 years, but a fresh reference was made to the idea on ‘Your Rights at Work’ this month, a labor show on the far-left radio station WPFW in Washington D.C. (6/2/22)
5/15/22 - Disinformation Board Defenders Come Up Short
DHS, the White House, and others are defending the new Disinformation Governance Board, but here are some things to remember when evaluating their claims:
The say it won’t monitor U.S. citizens, but merely conduct academic research into national security threat occasioned by disinformation from foreign countries and others. It’s just an advisory working group, not an operational agency. But don’t forget this is a “Governance Board”. Exactly what it intends to ‘govern’ and how remains to be seen.
The Board’s executive director Nina Jankowicz professes the Board is committed to maintaining free speech and civil liberties, but she personally has antipathy toward free speech. She is against Elon Musk buying Twitter to broaden the viewpoints expressed there. She said, "I shudder to think about if free speech absolutists were taking over more platforms....”
Jankowicz is supposed to be an expert in Russian disinformation, but thinks Hunter Biden’s laptop is just a Trump campaign product despite the New York Times and the Washington Post admitting the laptop is genuine.
Remember this is the same DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who claims “the border is closed” while instituting numerous policy changes to make sure it is open [compiled at The Daily Skirmish, 4/28/22]. If he is looking for the source of disinformation, he should look in the mirror.
Remember this is the same federal government that spent a billion dollars to pay media companies to publish stories about how the COVID vaccines were safe and effective - despite over 25,000 deaths associated with the vaccines - and has asked for the removal of factual information to the contrary.
This is the same government that went after ordinary parents for speaking their minds at school board meetings, then tried to cover it up. The government labeled parents ‘domestic terrorists’ and used counter-terrorism techniques against them, all the while denying it was doing so.
So, you may be forgiven for not trusting your government, a government that rules by phony narrative, spreads its own disinformation, and attempts to shut down contrary voices. The government is not supposed to be in the business of deciding what is true, or stifling the free speech of political opponents who won’t toe the party line. What this “Governance Board” ends up being remains to be seen, but there is already plenty of reason to believe it’s up to no good.

5/8/22 - 90 Federal Agencies Unveil ‘Equity Action Plans’
90 Federal Agencies Unveil ‘Equity Action Plans’
Reparations Updates
90 Federal Agencies Unveil ‘Equity Action Plans’
- The Biden administration is pushing "an ambitious equity and racial justice agenda" across the whole of government. Examples include:
- DHS pushing grants to fight white supremacists and other domestic terrorists
- “reduce discrimination against LGBTQI+ people”
- “Veterans Affairs said it will work to improve the social and economic determinants of health for LGBTQI+ veterans” (N.B. - ‘Social Determinants of Health’ [SDOH] is code for redistribution, e.g., giving apartments to the homeless supposedly so they will stay in better health)
Reparations Updates
- “Local cities and towns, college and even states are increasingly taking up reparations as efforts at the federal level have gone nowhere....” Momentum is building in Providence, Chicago, and elsewhere. “We know its [sic] a losing conversation to talk about slavery in the 1600s.... But we also know we don’t have to go that far back. We know what happened with urban renewal and we can see what’s happening with gentrification.”
- The work of the California reparations task force is ongoing. The task force voted by a narrow margin to limit reparations to descendants of slaves, instead of opening reparations up to all claims of ‘systemic racism’. In June, a public report will assert “how the institution of slavery continues to reverberate throughout California, including in the form of disparities in household income, health, employment and incarceration.” A reparations plan will be presented to the state legislature next year.
- Plans include “coalition-building, sharing a more optimistic message with voters and less preaching. Democrats should also reclaim issues of patriotism, stay out of the political correctness business and improve their dialogue on racial divisions....” They will remind “voters that despite slim margins in the House and Senate, they did pass into law the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan and $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan for pandemic relief.” The planners say the ‘socialist’ label is hurting Democrats, so they want to message how they are ‘conservative’, i.e., how they “want to conserve the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the land, the air, the water, the climate system, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, the National Labor Relations Act, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid...." If all that fails, they can always fall back on calling Republicans ‘authoritarian’ and claim the GOP wants to ‘destroy democracy’. Sure, just keep telling yourself that. It makes you easier to deal with.
- Student loan forgiveness has popped into the mainstream and the Biden administration is exploring options to cancel some student loan debt. LeftWatch first brought the subject to your attention in January.
4/10/22 - The Triumph of Transgenderism Will Come Through Administrative Fiat
- The Biden administration is expected to propose a rule to change the interpretation of the word ‘sex’ in Title IX to include, among other things, sexual orientation and gender identity. Title IX was enacted to prohibit discrimination against women in educational programs and activities receiving federal funds. The proposed rule is expected to be finalized and have the force of law. Among other things, this will set up a collision between federal civil rights law and new laws enacted in some states to protect women’s sports. Given that federal law generally preempts state law, biological males would once again be allowed to destroy women’s sports in those states. Why women and girls put up with the patriarchy destroying their sports is beyond me; they should start their own sports leagues. But I will tell you this: there are plenty of Congress critters, including Republicans, who will breathe a sigh of relief when Title IX is changed through executive branch rulemaking so they don’t have to face the voters on this issue. The ultimate irony: a law that was passed to expand educational opportunities for women will end up harming them instead.
- EPA Nominee Who Said #ResistCapitalism, Advocated ‘Climate Reparations’ Now Closer to Senate Confirmation
- Hundreds of climate activists blockaded a coal plant in West Virginia from which Senator Joe Manchin derives income. At least ten arrests were made.
- Abortion supporters are growing an underground network to keep abortion going if Roe v. Wade is overturned - home abortion kits, mobile abortion vans, online abortion drug sales, classes, etc.
- Senator Elizabeth Warren wants a digital currency to control the people
- Antifa KC finds new way to agitate against police brutality: “You allow police to occupy your ER and ‘help’ hospital staff restrain mental health patients so they can press criminal assault on officer charges whenever they get hit, scratched, or spit on. This creates an unjust hospital-to-prison pipeline.” (Facebook post)
- A left-wing advocacy group near Detroit - Motor City Freedom Riders - is pushing a local mass transit initiative and the expenditure of federal COVID relief money to further the ‘transit justice’ movement. (MCFR April 2022 Update mailing)
- The drumbeat on student loan forgiveness continues with an impending White House extension of the repayment moratorium; AOC calling for outright cancellation, and a rally, proclamation, and other activities by Indivisible in Washington state.
4/3/22 - Drumbeat Starting on Student Loan Forgiveness
- Student Loan Forgiveness - just in time for the 2022 elections: The student debt crisis hurts women. A federal program to help low-income student borrowers has failed. Over a hundred Democrat members of Congress are asking the Biden administration to extend the COVID pause on repayment. Well, that’s one way to buy votes. Bismarck is wondering why he didn’t think of that.
- A left-wing group of suburban moms (‘Red Wine & Blue’) has formed to fight ‘book bans’ in schools. Conservative parents have demanded school boards remove sexually explicit content from school libraries and have been labeled domestic terrorists for their trouble. The Left dismisses these efforts as all being cooked up by the Koch Brothers. The Left can’t imagine there just might be legitimate opposition to the Left’s plans to destroy America by sexualizing young children. Moreover, nobody is seeking to ‘ban books’. If parents want their children to be exposed to this filth, have at it - go out and buy the books yourselves. Just don’t ask taxpayers to pay for it or involve us by having government put its stamp of approval on it.
- Progressives are tricking people into joining social media communities in battleground states with nonpolitical content, then spending big on ads to pump out narratives to persuade members on political topics. The narratives sound exactly what the Biden administration says, e.g., Putin and corporate price gouging are to blame for inflation.
Myron Ebell - California bill to require parents to tell schools about gun ownership fails - You can bet this one will be back, and in more than one state.
- Climate ‘Emergency’ - White House reportedly working on Defense Production Act order to benefit climate - Plan claims 'clean energy' suddenly essential to 'national security'
- War on Cars - The Biden administration is poised to raise vehicle mileage standards. Query: Why aren’t there mileage standards for electric vehicles? How much coal or natural gas has to be burned to get an EV to go one mile?
- The fight for reparations for slavery continues at the state and local level, with a campaign in Asheville NC being a notable example, and California being the latest. Meanwhile, Black Lives Matter continues to push for reparations at the national level.
Shari Newton - The Biden task force on bias in home appraisals presented its recommendations. Radio host Dan Bongino fears the effort will inflate home prices, leading to larger loans which, as in the 2008 housing crisis, minority borrowers won’t be able to pay back.

They are academics and authors who believe that Socialism can be achieved on a large scale. They believe that the imperialists are enacting a world-wide culling of the herd. However, they do not denounce Putin's slaughter of Ukrainians and state that he is "responding" to the neo Nazis and the events of the past 8 year war.
They advocate for the U.S. to join China and Russia in the Belt and Road Initiative. That for the world to survive, rich and especially the poor, a union must take place.
The conference was interesting and most interesting was that Austin Red Guard infiltrated the event and were swiftly and humiliatingly removed. Security was quite heavy. All were searched and vetted. There were several armed guards. Two were in uniform.
The founder of CPI, Caleb Maupin is a prolific writer and educator who quotes Mao and Marx. Daniel Burke, a known American Communist politician stated that the U.S. is now in a Capitalist Monopoly state and cannot sustain itself. Haz of Infrared is a very interesting guy who totally denounced the parasitical left and declared that the Democrat party has destroyed itself so much, it cannot ever be redeemed. I will be writing about this on my blog. CPI do have their critics. Critics say that Maupin is a Russian State Owned Media Propagandist and not a smart one at that. He has been a contributor to American section of RT which is Russian State Media. But so is William Shatner. Is Shatner a Communist? These are the new Communists in America.
They are a grassroots movement with worldwide support. While I personally do not agree with their beliefs, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and they are an ally for me against the filthy left and Maoist Militant Red Guard Austin who damage our city, rioted, and defunded our police. Maoist Red Guards enjoy a heavy presence at UT and on the East Side of Austin.
CPI are amenable to working with all who can engage in a dialog and the conference was indeed diverse and interesting. I came home with many books and will be tracking their activities in Austin and writing about their movement. They believe that the American old guard is going down. They may be right.
They passionately state they love the U.S. and that they are the True Patriots and often referred to Lincoln during the conference. For those of you who are interested, follow Caleb Maupin on YouTube. They are working on a video of the conference. There will be more of them running for office in this country. One of the speakers squared off recently with AOC calling her publicly in front of a large crowd a "traitor to this country". He is a Christian Marxist.

- [Editor’s Note - CPIUSA members are what writer Daniel Flynn calls ‘Red, White & Blue Socialists’, people who dress up their socialism in patriotic garb to sell people on it. There was a wave of this in America before, as Flynn described in his excellent book A Conservative History of the American Left. As for CPIUSA not liking the Red Guard, that would be an internecine squabble among factions of the Left.]

The building project upon which we are embarking will consume our attention and enrich many, as any massive building project does. - There is a movement afoot to adopt ‘person-first’ language in the criminal justice system - to end the practice of describing a person either with a criminal record or awaiting trial in county jail as a "prisoner," "convict," "inmate," or "felon." ... Similarly, instead of describing a person as a “parolee,” “probationer” or “detainee,” Fortune’s website suggests using “person on parole,” “person on probation,” or “person in detention.”
3/13/22 - The Left’s Well-Organized Efforts to Target the Young
The Left’s Well-Organized Efforts to Target the Young
The Left’s Well-Organized Efforts to Target the Young
- Democrat lawmakers in Maryland want to establish a new ‘Advisory Council’ to gather data on homeschoolers. That’s just the camel’s nose under the tent. Given the Left’s penchants for expanding every advance they make, the end-game is undoubtedly regulation of and control over homeschooling in the state, even though they deny it. They’ll smile and tell you to your face now they have no intent to take your liberty away from you, but ask them this question: Is this the end, will you be satisfied with this, or will you be back next year and every year thereafter to tighten the screws? See what kind of answer you get when you ask if they will stop with gathering data. The Supreme Court has never squarely considered the issue of homeschooling. National homeschooling expert Alex Newman told an Anticommunism Action Team webinar earlier this year the issue will be in the Supreme Court within 10 years. We are just one Supreme Court Justice away from losing the freedom to homeschool, but the Court does respond to public opinion. The time is now to build public support for the idea parents should remain free to teach their children in a manner parents see fit as long as minimum standards are met.
- The Left has a huge effort underway to give teachers small grants for classroom materials their school districts cannot afford. Donorschoose.org is a teacher-founded nonprofit helping teachers to get supplies and other needs for their classrooms. In truth, it is another huge well-funded machine from the Left. It is totally left-wing in orientation, language, and the people involved (e.g., Stephen Colbert, Whoopi Goldberg). It has 145 people working for it. Where do they get all this money? Every time I turn around, I see another well-oiled, well-funded steamroller coming at us from the Left. The Potomac Tea Party Teacher Network is looking for ways to generate classroom grants that do not facilitate left-wing indoctrination. Send your ideas to [email protected].
- I wrote last week how the Left is grooming journalists and students to become political activists, like that’s the only thing in life. Maybe if you’re an aging hippy who misses the 1960s. The leftwing Brennan Center just had a workshop to teach young people how to be activists:
Leveraging digital literacy, protests and demonstrations, and public debate on social media channels, millennials and Generation Z have a distinct way of engaging in our society. And some are beginning to bring their style of civic engagement to the more traditional venues, such as in elected office. How does their reimagining of civic engagement in America challenge tradition? And how will it reshape our democracy?
Notice how the Brennan Center hijacks the term ‘civic engagement’. All citizens have a duty to maintain the Republic through civic engagement, but the Brennan Center is up to something completely different. Notice how they twist the meaning of ‘engagement’ into a “reimagining”, a “challenge” to tradition, and an effort to “reshape” the system. It doesn’t take a lot of guesswork to know they really mean Barack Obama’s “fundamental transformation” of America. If you love something, you do not seek to “fundamentally transform” it and turn it into something it’s not. But hats off to the Left. They know their business. They are well-organized and adept at strategies and tactics, including how to hoodwink the young and gullible.
3/6/22 - We’re All Activists Now
We’re All Activists Now
We’re All Activists Now
- The left-wing GroundTruth Project is encouraging journalists to become advocates instead of report the news. It has unleashed 300 reporters in local newsrooms in 49 states, paying half their salaries, with plans to mobilize 1,000 by 2024. The group gets millions of dollars from Left-wing foundations (Ford, MacArthur, Knight, etc.) to do all this. Another leftist nonprofit, States Newsroom, is similar but won’t disclose its donors. That can’t be good.
- The left-wing League of Education Voters is training students in Washington state to become activists. The group’s personnel have ties to Bill Gates, LGBTQ issues, illegal immigration advocacy, and the New School. The website talks about a “racial reckoning”, removing inequities and disparities, and incessantly agitating for more money for public schools to redistribute to “historically marginalized” demographics (i.e., minorities). First, the Left made ‘volunteer work’ (i.e., left-wing advocacy) mandatory to graduate from high school in places like Maryland, and now it’s training them how to do it.
- Bay Area calls on homeowners to help house homeless residents - This is a very heartwarming account of how ordinary citizens in the Bay Area are being asked to take homeless people into their houses. Nothing has gone wrong! Everyone is happy! The homeowners have learned and benefited from having the temporarily disadvantaged under their roofs. How long before this is cemented with tax exemptions or other governmental dispensations? From there, it’s only a short jump toward making it mandatory. Don’t think that’s how the Left works? Just remember COVID vaccines. That started with ‘nobody will be forced to be vaccinated’, then government offered incentives, and it ended with people being forced out of their jobs and the military, thanks to the authoritarian Left.
- The Pulitzer Center is pushing its debunked 1619 Project into libraries, after-school programs, law schools, and prisons. With respect to the latter, critics say the program will instill racial resentment in prisoners, make them suspicious of the justice system, teach them evil capitalists push unhealthy products on minorities, and instill myths about police killing black people at the drop of a hat.
- The government council would set wages and working conditions for the industry and enforce labor laws. Workers cite no end of grievances to justify setting up the council, but critics warn the council would have too much power and drive enterprise out of California. Here again we see the Left’s destructive impulse to make the perfect the enemy of the good and attempt to create heaven on earth which always ends up hurting people in the long run. You don’t like your working conditions? Start your own company and coddle your workers to your heart’s content. If it ends up being a better mousetrap, more power to you. By the way, such worker councils (‘soviets’) coordinated strike activity in Russia and cultural Marxism theorist Antonio Gramsci advocated worker co-ops as a vector for ushering in socialist revolution, so let’s not pretend the bill in California is just about wages and working conditions, OK?
2/27/22 - They’ve Encircled the City - San Antonio
San Antonio Falling to Siren Song of Sustainability and Equity
San Antonio Falling to Siren Song of Sustainability and Equity
- Alarms are sounding for San Antonio - the nation’s 7th-largest city. The city council is in solidarity with the trained Marxists of BLM. The mayor marched in unity with BLM. The city is pursuing unconstitutional ‘equity’ resource allocation by skin color with help from Leftist demographic data firms. The city is paying for race-based indoctrination. San Antonio is also implementing U.N. sustainability programs that run roughshod over property rights and short-circuit voter control over local issues (Agenda 21 / 2030).
- ‘The Emancipator’ was the nation’s first newspaper devoted to ending slavery. Activists will launch a new version in coming months because, you know, slavery still exists. The new paper is a joint effort of Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research and The Boston Globe’s Opinion team. “I like to say it’s anti-racism, every day, on purpose,” one of the founders said. Just what we need - more divisive inflamed focus on race. It’s a communist technique - divide the world into oppressor and oppressed and exploit every grain of discontent. Vlad taught us that.
- State preemption laws prevent localities from passing laws that conflict with state law. Forty-states have preemption laws specifically related to firearms. Shoot out the state preemption law and towns are free to pass local gun control ordinances. Colorado repealed most of its firearms preemption statute last year, leading Boulder now to reconsider its assault weapons ban. The movement is afoot elsewhere, e.g., Montgomery County, Maryland.
- The Michael Bloomberg-funded gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety is gunning for ‘stand your ground’ laws, which the group oh-so-cleverly calls ‘shoot first’ laws (Everytown mailing dated 2/24/22). The group claims that states that have such laws have 8 percent more homicides, but left-wing advocacy groups have been known to make stuff up and play games with statistics before (read Bernard Goldberg’s books and learn the history of how Dr. Bernard Nathanson made up all kinds of lies in the run-up to Roe v. Wade). Any one gun control measure might sound reasonable by itself, but make no mistake: They are salami-slicing and will not be happy until guns are gone completely. They want ALL of my freedom, so I’m not willing to give them ANY of it. They’ve made it impossible to negotiate, so I won’t. Just ask them if they will stop pushing after they get what they want this time and see what kind of answer you get.
- It’s amazing how much money the Left has. The Hewlett Foundation and Omidyar Network are giving $40 million to five academic institutions to attack that favorite bugaboo of the Left - ‘neoliberalism’. The money will go to undermine theories “developed by thinkers like Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, [that] resulted in policies to shrink the government, reduce government debt, open up trade, and deregulate the market that gained steam under the Reagan administration in the United States and under Margaret Thatcher’s watch in Britain.” So, they want bigger government, more debt, less trade, and more regulations to stifle economic activity and innovation. Terrific. Why do you suppose left-wing foundations would pay $40 million for that?
- “Energy bills are soaring, and the climate crisis is worsening. The one solution for the energy sector is to bring it under public ownership.” So proclaims an article in Jacobin magazine, a socialist publication. Organizers have two-thirds of the signatures they need to put public seizure of the two largest shareholder-owned utilities in Maine on the ballot. Climate change is one of the selling points. But one need only remember the endemic corruption in publicly-held companies in Venezuela and South Africa to question whether this is a good idea. And what happens when electric power is politicized? Will ‘bad’ companies get cut off? How about individuals who don’t toe the party line? If you think these things can’t happen, ask yourself why legislators in New Hampshire think it’s necessary to keep social credit scoring out of business transactions and consumer purchases:
- Now, it’s ‘from each according to their ability; to each according to their obedience.’ The future is close enough that a bill has been introduced in New Hampshire (HB 1469) to prohibit merchant and banking discrimination against businesses and individuals on the basis of social, environmental, or social justice scores unless the practice is fully disclosed to the customer up front. Similar bills are pending in Indiana and Virginia, according to a Heartland Institute mailing dated 1/26/22. [LeftWatch, 1/30/22)

You Will Be Assimilated: Growing Government for the Borg
- The Left is trying to get more people hooked on government by growing libraries, schools, healthcare, and environmental grants beyond their original purposes.
Around the country, public libraries are offering free food to kids, counseling, social workers, help with job and social services applications, and daytime shelter for the homeless, among other services. Librarians now call themselves “community organizers” and “activists” whose job it is to “meet the most pressing needs of our community,” not help you find information. But not every staff member likes dealing with drunk patrons, shoving matches, and psychotic breaks. But, overall, the kudzu-like growth in new functions continues - “the sky’s the limit,” one librarian said.
Mission creep is also evident at public schools where, in California, the plan is to usher in more subsidized food, pre-K, mental health, and a host of other programs for disadvantaged and minority students. Attack the family, replace the parents.
Meanwhile, the EPA is directing infrastructure money through the “lens of justice and equity” to low-income and minority communities because they haven’t gotten their “fair share”. No matter what the Democrats call the pot of money these days, it always seems to end up going for “justice and equity”. Other important values are getting lost, like considering infrastructure projects on their merits or economic development that would benefit everybody.
All of this brings to mind ‘SDOH’ - Social Determinants of Health. This arose as Obamacare was being implemented. It’s the idea people can’t be healthy unless they get free housing and lots of other free stuff from the government. SDOH thinking is making steady inroads.
All of this grows the government, shrinks private activity, and turns citizens into “perpetual children” as Alexis de Tocqueville noted. Wrong direction.
Plastics Treaty
- U.N. member countries are meeting this month to draft a new international treaty to reduce the amount of plastics going for one-time disposable uses. Another way to attack the oil industry?
Update - Climate Change Journalism
- As previously reported, more money is going into news coverage of climate change issues, e.g., Columbia Journalism Review, Rupert Murdoch. Now the AP is getting another $8 million from various left-wing foundations to hire more eco-journalists. Which puts AP in a financial conflict of interest: do not look to AP for unbiased coverage of so-called climate change, because this is where their bread is buttered.

Greens Turning to Violence?
- Who could forget Earth First! and the tree-spiking of the 1980s? Today, increasingly unhinged environmental activists in Europe are talking about blocking streets, school strikes, civil disobedience, occupying coal mines, sabotage to reduce economic activity, smashing car showrooms, destroying cars, blowing up pipelines, demolishing highway construction sites, and even forming a green ‘Red Army Faction’ (the group that assassinated politicians and businessmen in Germany in the 1970s). Don’t be surprised if environmental violence spreads to America.
New York Mayor Channeling Michelle Obama on Slop for Schoolkids
- Michelle Obama’s school lunch program was notoriously unpopular, but New York City Mayor Eric Adams wants to force his vegan diet on the city’s students. The first ‘Vegan Friday’ featured black bean burritos, which many students tossed into the garbage. His Honor doesn’t plan to stop with kids. ““I’ve got to get New Yorkers to eat a plant-based centered life,” the Mayor said. “Food is doing more of an injustice than mass incarceration,” he has also said. What a mess they make when delusional Progressives set out to create a perfect world.
- Meanwhile, activists in Europe want a 50 percent meat tax to fight climate change. By the way, meat dishes - not U.N.-approved bug meals - were served at COP 26 last year. The technocrats have no intention of living by the rules they want to foist on us peasants.
- There’s gold in them thar green hills. The Agriculture Department will hand out $1 billion to farmers, ranchers, and forest owners for climate change projects. And you wonder how climate change got so popular. Follow the money.
Canada’s Conversion Therapy Ban Applies to Parents
- Canadian parents could go to jail if they don’t affirm the professed gender identity or sexual orientation of their children.
More Democrat Sleight-of-Hand Coming Up
- “One thing we can all count on—Democrats will try to use an omnibus spending package to drive their left wing policy agenda and try to insert failed policy proposals from the Green New Deal and ‘Build Back Broke.’” [Heritage Action mailing - 2/12/22]

Get’em While They’re Young (Universal Daycare and Pre-K)
- Vladimir Lenin famously said, “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.” So pardon me for being dubious of new proposals from the Left for universal daycare and universal pre-kindergarten classes. “It’s time to end the nightmare of means-tested and debilitatingly expensive childcare in New York, socialist state senator Jabari Brisport writes in Jacobin. We need a universal childcare system, paid for by taxing the rich.” Here’s the first problem with this: the combined tax rate in New York already exceeds 60 percent, which is why a lot of well-off people have moved to Florida. Sorry, socialists, but there isn’t any more to get. Despite this obvious constraint, a universal childcare bill has 20 co-sponsors in the New York State Senate. Meanwhile, pieces of Joe Biden’s failed Build Back Better bill are being put forward separately, including a plan for government-funded universal pre-K schooling. Maybe universal pre-K can compensate for dysfunctional households, but the solution is improving the households, not turning kids over to government at an earlier age. The proposal expressly excludes religious programs from participating, making the goal here very explicit: “the government-funded progressive takeover of our lives.”
Minneapolis Might Expand Renter Purchasing Rights
- In rent control cities starting in 1980, tenants have been given the right of first refusal to purchase their buildings when the owner wants to sell, turn the units into condominiums, etc. That’s not new. What is new is a proposal in Minneapolis that would allow renters “to assign their purchasing rights to qualifying organizations—companies, nonprofits, or even the city itself. The process would give the renters a bargaining chip, with potential commercial buyers incentivized to appeal to existing renters by offering things like long-term affordability covenants, rent stabilization agreements, or better building maintenance rules.” Sounds great, but remember that every expansion of tenants’ rights disincentivizes the construction of new housing. So, the jury is out on the Minneapolis proposal as to whether it, like so many other liberal policies, will end up hurting the very people it is supposed to help. The proposal is being spear-headed by the son of the far-left state Attorney General Keith Ellison, so put me down as doubly suspicious.
New (Old) Bogeyman: Chemicals
- It sounds so 1970s, but activists in Canada have found lots of new things to worry about as far as chemicals are concerned. They are calling for limits on the production of plastic, regulating the number of new chemicals that can be produced, and assessing the cumulative impacts of pesticides. It makes some sense until you remember what’s been called the “regulatory ratchet” - regulations always start out small, but the screws get tightened over time and ever-more stringent regulations are imposed. There’s also the abuse of the ‘precautionary principle’. If feeding great quantities of a substance every day to mice causes them to develop cancer, this supposedly justifies regulating the substance down to a few parts per gazillion even though there’s no evidence that level of exposure does anything to humans. Then there’s always the not so hidden de-growth agenda - the people calling for more regulation are often anti-capitalist or down right socialist whose mission is to regulate private companies out of existence. Don’t believe there’s a hidden agenda? Then how do you explain the comment from one of the activists in the article summarized here that “we need sufficiency instead of growth”? In any event, the game is always ‘how can you oppose such a sensible regulation, it’s such a small thing?’ Answer: why would you want to start compromising with people who you already know intend to salami-slice their way to the whole enchilada (to mix metaphors), perhaps to the point where you are regulated out of existence?
New Front in the Left’s War on Food: Restaurant Menus
- A study found sustainability messages on restaurant menus make a significant difference in what people order. ‘Go meatless for one meal and you save the emissions equivalent to charging your phone for two years.’ ‘More people are eating less meat. Join this movement and be kind to the planet.’ Messages like these can get people to change from beef to bean burritos 22-25 percent of the time. Panera Bread and other restaurants are disclosing the carbon footprint of menu choices. Guilt-tripping like this is succeeding in modifying behavior where previous messages about veganism and going organic failed. Question: when does a ‘nudge’ become a ‘shove’ and when do we have to start eating bugs like the U.N. wants us to do? Remember what happens after the camel’s nose gets under the tent. The camel makes love to your wife.

Social Credit Scoring Creeps in on Little Cat Feet
- The use of social credit scores to control citizen behavior in communist China is now well known. Disobey the regime’s predilections and maybe you won’t be able to get on a train or fly. Less well known is the creeping use of social credit scoring in the U.S. Scoring for businesses started in the social investing realm at least 25 years ago, but has gone mainstream with major corporations now reporting their sustainability and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) scores as a matter of routine, e.g., Wells Fargo. But scoring is not limited to businesses. It is spreading to the individual level, with Mastercard letting individuals track the climate impact of individual spending. The World Economic Forum wants to take it a step further, by cutting off spending once individuals reach their carbon limit. No wonder the Left doesn’t like cash and is pushing us to a digital currency. Read the dystopian novel The Antifan Girlfriend by Paula Weiss to see what a future centered on social credit scores will look like. In the book, social credit scores determine where you live (perhaps a flop-house with government-assigned roommates), how you get around (not everyone is allowed to own a car), where you can shop and eat (with finest reserved for those with the highest scores), and more. Forget merit and hard work. Those are the old ways. Now, it’s ‘from each according to their ability; to each according to their obedience.’ The future is close enough that a bill has been introduced in New Hampshire (HB 1469) to prohibit merchant and banking discrimination against businesses and individuals on the basis of social, environmental, or social justice scores unless the practice is fully disclosed to the customer up front. Similar bills are pending in Indiana and Virginia, according to a Heartland Institute mailing dated 1/26/22.
Route Fifty (worth monitoring for state and local issues)
- “Connecting state and local government leaders” - website
- “we cover a variety of topics under the larger state, county and municipal government umbrella beyond technology and innovation, including issues like management, budgeting, best practices, smart ideas, open data, open government and public services”
- “Initially launched as Government Executive’s State & Local channel in July 2014, Route Fifty expanded to a standalone digital publication, RouteFifty.com, in April 2015“
- “Route Fifty connects the people and ideas advancing state, county, and municipal government across the United States” - from the ‘About’ page
- from an activist: “I say it is to comprehend for the elites the status of local implementation of the New World Order, the technocracy mechanisms to extend the elites rule down to the local level. This web site carries the Leftist narrative but truthfully reports what both sides are doing. I attended one of their meetings for government executives and the presentation was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Prove me wrong.”
- the site definitely tilts to the Left, with its emphasis on equity, smart cities, democracy, moving to a cashless society, and discouraging auto use. The site is useful to anyone interested in the Left’s next moves on cities and infrastructure.
- The site is also useful to activists working state issues more generally. See, e.g., “What to Watch For in State Legislatures in 2022”

Updates
Foster Care for All
- According to the Left, everyone is worse off if some people are better off. So, parents should swap their kids with the homeless or the poor in the name of ‘equity’ (LeftWatch 1/9/22) or, better yet, let’s just institute universal Foster Care for All. Make no mistake - the ultimate goal is to abolish the family and impose collective child-rearing by social engineers. It takes a village to raise left-wing village idiots, you see. What better way to shred all human bonds and replace everything with government than to rip children from the arms of their parents and make sure they never see each other again. This is how the Left will bring about Heaven on Earth and end all human inequities and suffering. This is their dream. They are so delusional, I don’t know where to begin.
Interpreting Your Rights Away for the Greater Good
- Individual rights like free speech and the Second Amendment are in conflict with the collective good and must yield to the competing rights of the hive mind. The General Welfare requires overturning Citizens United and reimposing strict campaign finance laws on corporations. (That case also freed unions to contribute unlimited amounts to campaigns, but we won’t talk about that.) It’s only fair that we lower the volume of corporate speech because others can’t afford to talk as loudly. (Boy, is this behind the curve. Woke corporation are now the Left-wing fascists’ best friends.) Guns inflict injury and death, so self-defense should be limited to calling the police (after we defund them, of course, so good luck with that). We must replace freedom of religion with the Supreme Court filigree prohibiting government ‘endorsement’ of religion, so that any intrusion of religion into the public square whatsoever can forever be prohibited. Ain’t collectivism grand?
Local Journalism
- Local reporters working local beats like the police blotter and city hall is largely a thing of the past. On the political Right, the Franklin News Foundation has attempted to fill the void with TheCenterSquare.com. On the Left, it’s the Knight Foundation which is holding its 15th annual conference on sustainable local digital media. 3,000 attended last year. Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the flawed 1619 Project is keynoting this year. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are on the menu, as is how to handle that pesky ‘misinformation’ from the Right. All for sake of our ‘democracy’, don’t you know. Forget that ‘Republic’ stuff with protected individual rights, that’s so 1776. Mobocracy is so much better, you’ll see.
Another Democrat Assault on Work
- AOC says the government should pay people to stay home even if they don’t have any COVID symptoms. This follows her Green New Deal idea the government should provide economic security to everyone even if they’re unwilling to work, and Nancy Pelosi wanting to pass Obamacare so you could stay home and play the violin. Never mind that people like to work and find it fulfilling. Prediction: ‘Labor Day’ will become ‘Freedom from Labor Day’ as a national holiday. We’ll just have robots do everything (“fully automated luxury communism”).
Updates
- Satanic Clubs Are Now a Thing - Another Satanic Club has opened, this one in Ohio.
- COVID Relief Funds - We knew they were being misused for upgrading school athletic facilities and enabling local Universal Basic Income projects, but now comes news that they will also be misdirected to fighting so-called climate change. State governors plan to use federal emergency COVID money for electric cars, solar batteries, coastline erosion, storm damage, etc.
- Food - In October, LeftWatch reported the Left is reimagining food production - less fertilizer, pesticides, and red meat. Put food at the center of the Progressive agenda to control the people, oops, save the environment. The Progressives are progressing - British farmers will soon be paid not to farm but to return their land to the wild. But like other hare-brained Progressive schemes, their food fantasies cause problems and hurt people. Sri Lanka’s turn to organic farming has been a disaster - crop yields are way down and prices are way up. Extrapolating a bit, if you outlaw fertilizer and modern pesticides, millions will go hungry. You will be forced to eat apples with worms in them, but at least that will be better than the bugs the United Nations wants to feed you. Prediction: the Lunatic Left will move to outlaw irrigation pipes next. But never fear. Big Food is combining with Big Tech to bring about a “transformation” in how food is produced and consume to fight - you guessed it - climate change and inequality. We will take your cookie away but you will eat your oatmilk porridge and be happy about it. Or else.

Money from Washington Fueling Spread of Universal Basic Income Idea
- The Left’s UBI idea has been around for a long time, but the latest wrinkle is funding it with federal COVID relief funds. I’ve seen UBI pop up in a couple of localities recently, but I couldn’t figure out where the money was coming from. Now we know: “A pilot program that will give monthly cash assistance to select low-income residents is in development in Fairfax County (VA). While eligibility criteria, payment amounts, and other details are still being determined, the county has allocated $1.5 million to the effort from its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds....” A new bit of rhetoric is greasing the skids for UBI - the Left wants us to stop focusing on the ‘dignity of work’ and start romanticizing the ‘dignity of the workers’. Yes, the world owes everyone a living regardless of the choices they make and even if they refuse to work. (I just heard this idea expressed in so many words in a Marxist video.) Advocates swear UBI will not destroy the work ethic, but will instead free people to be all they can be. That might be true in a handful of exceptional cases but, it seems to me, human nature will produce far more laziness and sloth if UBI takes hold. I confess I was slow on the uptake here. COVID relief money has been misused by schools to build athletic facilities instead of improving their air filtration systems, but I didn’t realize what other mischief was afoot. Moral of the Story: if money is pouring out of Washington, you can be sure there is leftist funny business going on, no matter how the idea was sold or what the money is supposedly for.
Satanic Clubs
- The Satanic Temple started an After School Satan Club for elementary school children in Belleville, IL. The activities center on arts & crafts but will migrate to critical thinking and ‘getting kids to think for themselves’. Sounds harmless enough, right? The problem is things are not as they seem. ‘Critical thinking’ now means ‘criticize everything and tear everything down until nothing’s left’. If that sounds like Marxist-derived critical theory, that’s because it is. Don’t forget: Saul Alinsky spoke glowingly of Lucifer as the “first radical” in Rules for Radicals. As you can see, the club is nothing more than an indoctrination center bent on dialectical negation of traditional values and founding principles. (The Hegelian dialectic is the setting in motion of contrary ideas in multiple iterative cycles until there is nothing left of the original ideas.) Another problem is that the satanic forces are joined at the hip with the Planned Parenthood abortion business. The Satanic Temple has filed multiple lawsuits in overturn pro-life laws in several states, claiming that abortion is a religious right and a sacred ritual. So when they start a club to teach kids to make lanyards, don’t take them at face value.
Democratic Socialists of America
- A number of DSA members have been elected to political office in New York. They have established a beachhead and are ramping up. Their “Tax the Rich” campaign resulted in the biggest tax increase in New York in a hundred years. They continue to work on defunding the police. But they are also putting their weight behind labor strife, tenant struggles, and other local causes. “The offices of NYC-DSA’s elected officials are also becoming hubs for organizing in their districts.” They also have their sights set on single payer and building up from city council seats to win mayoral races and the Governor’s mansion.
Debt
- Some leftists are taking the cancelation of student loans idea and running with it. Why not wipe out all debt, if it becomes ‘too burdensome’. The ancients held debt forgiveness ‘jubilees’ and so should we, the argument goes.
Gun Rights
- “Secure storage” is the gun control lobby’s cause du jour [Moms Demand Action mailing, 1/10/22]. Who could be against gun safety and protecting kids? The problem is the gun control lobby will never stop until the Second Amendment and gun rights are completely obliterated. They take one salami slice at a time, until background checks become universal registries and confiscation. They want all my freedom so I’m not willing to give them ANY of it. Not when that’s the game they’re playing. Massachusetts requires guns be locked away. California, Connecticut, and New York have gun locking restrictions in some circumstances. Look for secure storage legislation in other states this year.

- First, they’ll withdraw life-sustaining treatment, then extract your organs. Make no mistake, the Left wants to kill you for your organs, just like the Chinese are doing today with prisoners of conscience. There is an organization fighting the preliminary stages of all this (assisted suicide and euthanasia) -join the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.
