• Although FGM is treated somewhat differently under the various schools of Islamic jurisprudence, with the Shafi’i school making it mandatory, the Hanafi, Hanbali, and Maliki Sunni schools making it either permitted or encouraged, and the Dawoodi Bohra sub-sect of Shi’ite Ismaili Islam also making it obligatory, there is no school of Islamic jurisprudence that forbids FGM.

• Afghan assailants’ names are Ahmad Mulakhil and Mohammad Kabir. They claimed in court the girl initiated the encounter. Both were found guilty.

• Following 9/11 and the U.S. defeat of Al-Qa’eda and the Taliban, the United States Department of State helped codify a new constitution for Afghanistan which placed the country under Islamic Law (sharia). This newly issued code would seem merely an updated version of what’s already been U.S. government-enabled constitutional law in Afghanistan for the last 22 years.

• This story is from last year but adds to accounts of restrictions placed on girls and women by the Taliban in Afghanistan: girls over age 12 are forbidden to attend regular schools but may only attend madrassas, where the only curriculum is Islamic teachings.

• It’s about the bloodline. Because every child born of a Muslim father is held to be Muslim, it follows that Islamic Law makes stringent control of women a priority (to be sure it wasn’t the mailman). Women working in an unsupervised workplace cannot be adequately policed according to this mindset. Likewise, the rape of non-Muslim women is permitted under sharia because if a child is born from such rape, that child will be considered a Muslim, thus adding to Muslim numbers.
