First They Came for the Trump Aides
  - Virginia’s Governor, Democratic Leaders, and Restaurant Owner Fail to Comment on Sarah Sanders Incident

by Liberato.US
June 25, 2018

UPDATES and Lessons Learned - see below

A spate of ugly incidents has taken place in recent days in which Trump officials and others on the Right have been publicly humiliated.  Protesters confronted DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a Mexican restaurant in D.C.  Actor Seth Rogen refused to have his picture taken with House Speaker Paul Ryan, telling the speaker “no way” and proceeding to give Ryan a piece of his mind. Rogen described the entire encounter on the Stephen Colbert show.  Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi was driven out of a movie theater after protesters surrounded her and shouted at her she was a horrible person.  Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) urged a crowd to harass more Trump officials and give them “no peace, no sleep.” Whatever the reason, ugliness and hate is spewing forth from the Left now, unabated.

Now comes restaurant owner and moral poseur Stephanie Wilkinson who threw White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders out of Wilkinson’s Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia on June 22nd.

“This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals,” Wilkinson told the Washington Post.  The action came after Wilkinson consulted with her employees.  Several are gay, she made a point of saying.

So here we have a public accommodation discriminating against members of the public on the basis of political beliefs. There’s undoubtedly a constitutional cause of action in there somewhere, perhaps an Equal Protection claim under the U.S. and Virginia Constitutions, conspiracy to deny civil rights (the ‘KKK statute’), or revoking the Red Hen’s business and liquor licenses for offending public policy.  The law on discrimination on the basis of political beliefs is newly developing, but already there is some indication some courts will be receptive to such claims.

Liberato.US asked Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s office the following questions:
  • How is it constitutional for a public accommodation to refuse to serve members of the public on the basis of their political beliefs?
  • Does the Governor condemn the Red Hen Restaurant and its owner Stephanie Wilkinson as mean-spirited and divisive for discriminating against White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders for her political beliefs?

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE.

Northam had promised less toxic politics when he was sworn in five months ago.

"It can be hard to find our way in a time when there's so much shouting, when nasty, shallow tweets take the place of honest debate," Northam said, according to an AP story. "We are bigger than this."

Liberato.US also asked Virginia House Democratic Leader David Toscano and Virginia Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) the following questions:
  • How is it constitutional for a public accommodation to refuse to serve members of the public on the basis of their political beliefs?
  • Will you patron or support a bill to amend Virginia’s Human Rights Act to prevent public accommodations from discriminating on the basis of political beliefs?

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE from Toscano.

Sen. Saslaw’s office responded – “Sen Saslaw is out of the office and not available for comment” – but offered no explanation why he could not be reached.

Finally, Liberato.US asked Red Hen owner Stephanie Wilkinson the following questions:
  • How is it constitutional for a public accommodation to refuse to serve members of the public on the basis of their political beliefs?
  • You have gay employees.  How is it moral to force conservatives to bake cakes for gay people but gay people don’t have to bake cakes for conservatives?
  • How is it moral for Leftists to take the liberty of ‘living their convictions’ while forcing others, like the Little Sisters of the Poor, not to live theirs?
  • How is it moral to accept business and liquor licenses while misrepresenting you will be a public accommodation, then turn around and claim you don’t have to serve members of the public because you don’t like them?

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE.

  • How is it moral to be so self-important and grandiose? Isn’t that a sin of pride?
  • Governor Ralph Northam has not condemned the Red Hen as of this writing, despite calls from other Democrats for civility. This is not surprising; Northam himself is prone to preening on about ‘morality’.  The lesson for the non-Left is to go right for the Left’s moral case and destroy it.  This approach finesses disputes about whether facts are true and sources are credible.  Not only does it rebut their argument and deflate their feelings of joy and smug superiority, it pours acid on the glue and quasi-religiosity that holds them together – the fellowship of superciliousness.  They really do labor under the illusion they are better than everyone else.  For more on how to do this, see Bring Down the Left's Entire House of Cards with Moral Ju-Jitsu on Liberato.US.
